Segovia earns the wild card to pole vault at the state meet

Marble Falls pole vaulter Django Segovia will compete at the Class 5A state track meet after earning the wild card, which means he had the best vault among the four regional bronze medalists. He cleared 15 feet on his second attempt.

The state track meet is Friday, May 13, at Mike Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus, 707 Clyde Littlefield Drive in Austin.

The announcement came May 2 and Django found out soon after that.

“I was in class and my coach (Justin Doiron) texted me,” he said. “I kind of figured I would get it being that we’re one of the hardest regions.”

Three other Marble Falls athletes’ seasons ended at the regional meet, which was April 29. Senior discus thrower Logan Barnes set a new personal best in the event with a mark of 156-8. Lady Mustang junior pole vaulter Anne McCary, a junior, finished fourth with a leap of 10-6, while Meredith Cormier, a senior, was seventh with a vault of 10-0.

In boys pole vault, the winning mark was 15-03 by Gregory-Portland senior Jacob Thomas. His teammate, sophomore Colton Harrison, cleared 15-0 but did so on his first attempt to grab the silver medal.

MFHS track and field coach Chris Schrader said once Django cleared 15-0, which ties him for the school record again, the Mustang attempted 15-3.

“He doesn’t get perturbed when the chips are down,” he said. “He went over like a rocket at 15 feet. When he got to 15-3, he missed it by a hair.”

What makes Segovia tough to beat is his ability to focus on the task in front of him, the coach said.

“He’s calm, cool and collected on the runway,” he said. “He works real hard, he’s easy to coach, he does what he’s asked to do. We’re happy for him because he works so hard and diligently for four years. He’s equaled the school record and was in contention to get 15-3. He didn’t play it safe.”

As for the state meet, Proper Rock Hill senior Gavin Hecke is entering with the top vault at 16-0 followed by Burleson senior Reece Williams and Thomas at 15-3. North Richland Hill Birdville senior Nick Loibl, Santa Fe senior Seth Jacobs, Harrison and Segovia follow thanks to vaulting 15-0.

“It looks like it’ll be fun,” Segovia said. “I’ve never vaulted at UT. I’m pretty excited. At regionals, it was OK. But I can move on to state and hopefully I can get the school record.”
